    Scouts will learn the science of solving crimes and experiment with fingerprinting, microscopic analysis, and chromatography. This workshop will fulfill requirements 1-4 and 6-7. Requirement #5 (Visit a police station) will not be fulfilled at the museum.

    While this workshop is intended to help Bear Cub Scouts earn their Forensics badge, it is open to Scouts and family members of all ages.

    Group rates are available for groups of 5 or more and include 1 chaperone per 5 scouts.

    Stressed at work? Need a break from your hectic day? Come to Dome Planetarium and calm down. Enjoy a short star talk, then let your tension float away under starry skies with soothing background music. First Wednesday of every month at noon.

    Free parking in the museum's parking garage, just bring in your ticket to be validated at the Front Desk. If you arrive past Noon, it will be dark in the Dome. Please pause for a few moments to allow your eyes to adjust to the dark. Someone will help you find your seats. Food and drink welcome in the Dome.

    Please note that all are welcome, but this program may not be suitable for young children. It is designed to give people a quiet time to relax, and periods of long sitting can be difficult for some young ones.

    Thousands of exoplanets have been discovered over the past two decades. In this simulcast lecture, Dr. Kaltenegger will discuss these discoveries and explore how we can determine which of these exoplanets might be suitable for life. She will discuss techniques and missions to detect life itself on these worlds to finally answer the question”Are we alone in the Universe?”. Immersive visuals will accompany this live simulcast from Adler Planetarium in our Dome Planetarium. 

    Doors will open at 7, seating is first come first serve.

    Lisa Kaltenegger is director of the Carl Sagan Institute at Cornell University and an associate professor in Cornell’s astronomy department. Her research focuses on exploring worlds around alien Suns and searching for signs of life. Her awards include the 2014 Doppler Prize for Innovation in Science and the 2012 Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize for Physics. She was named an innovator to watch by TIME, a Role Model for Women in Science and Research by the European Commission, and one of America’s Young Innovators by Smithsonian Magazine. She is featured in the new IMAX movie "Search for Life in space". Asteroid 7734 Kaltenegger is named after her.

    Art Club is a monthly meeting of people who love art. We select a different topic each month, and enjoy a casual staff-led discussion (with Powerpoint slides) accompanied by coffee and treats. Participants are encouraged, though not required, to submit discussion suggestions of art that is related to the topic. It's like a book club, but without as much homework! 

    This month's topic is This month's topic is Emergence: The National Arts of Central Illinois . This exhibition is a collaboration between the museum and over 50 artists from throughout the area. Zac Zetterberg, exhibit curator, will discuss the selection process and a few of his favorite works. The exhibit opens September 30th, be sure to check it out before our discussion! If you'd like to talk about a specific piece, please email Shelby at slessen@peoriariverfrontmuseum.org.

    In this workshop, Scouts will design their own video game! Working as a group, Scouts will learn about the basics of game design—what makes a game enjoyable and challenging—as well as the basics of computer programming using Scratch. Scratch is a web-based program developed by MIT to make an accessible but powerful programming language for students.

    While this workshop is intended to help Webelos to earn their Game Design patch, it is open to Scouts and family members of all ages.

    A one-day workshop for Cadettes to get creative with books! The girl scouts will learn the basics of bookbinding and will even make their own diary to take home! The workshop includes everything the scouts need to get their patch!
    While this workshop is intended for brownies to earn their Home Scientist patch, it is open to scouts and family members of all ages. There will be a snack break. Scouts are welcome to bring a snack or money for the concession stand.

    27th Annual Bridge Contest

    6th, 7th, and 8th grade students! It's time to test your imagination and your technical skill! The Illinois Valley Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is sponsoring the 27th Annual Bridge Contest.

    THE OBJECTIVE

    Design and construct a bridge using standard 3” x 5” (176 mm x 127 mm) index cards. The winning team will be judged based on team participation, conformance to the design and construction requirements, a written report, and finally, the performance of the bridge under a dead load.

    Sat, Feb 17: Drop off your bridge at the Peoria Riverfront Museum
    Sun, Feb 18: Contest and awards at the Peoria Riverfront Museum (part of Engineering Day)
