Giant Screen Film & Event with Actress Karan Kendrick
Fri, Apr 21 | 4 pm & 7 pm
Present by The Central Illinois Chapter of The Links, Incorporated & Peoria Riverfront Museum
Actress Karan Kendrick will be in Peoria for two public screenings of “Hidden Figures,” April 21, 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Riverfront Museum’s Giant Screen Theater. Kendrick will be speaking before the screenings about her work on the film and the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education.
“Hidden Figures” is about the vital contributions toward the space race of three African-American women who worked for NASA as mathematicians: Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), a physicist and mathematician who calculated flight trajectories for missions including Apollo 11, Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer), a mathematician also known as “The Human Computer,” and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe), a mathematician and aerospace engineer. Rated PG.
The women were the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn (Glen Powell) into orbit – a stunning achievement that restored the nation's confidence, turned around the Space Race and galvanized the world.
The films will be preceded by a meet-and-greet and book signing with Kendrick and members of The Links.
The daylong event is sponsored by The Central Illinois Chapter of The Links Incorporated, as a fundraiser for the group’s scholarship program. Many of The Links members are women engineers involved in area STEM education.
