    Exhibit Spring Wb Decoy

    AMERICAN DECOY: The Invention

    Opens February 9

American Decoy: The Invention represents the most valuable collection of art since the museum’s predecessor, Lakeview Museum of Arts and Sciences, exhibited The Passion of Rodin. - John D. Morris, President & CEO, Peoria Riverfront Museum

The museum is excited to showcase the largest in-house curated decoy show in our history, which will highlight decoys from our own collection and many others, including the collections of Tom Figge and the Shelburne Museum! - Bill Conger, Curator, Peoria Riverfront Museum

From the earliest devices luring waterfowl from the air, decoys have provided sustenance for nearly a millennia. The trajectory of this ingenious craft has evolved into a sophisticated art form which speaks to hunters and artisans alike.

A nationally significant art exhibition organized by the Peoria Riverfront Museum, American Decoy: The Invention, celebrates the uniquely American art form with decoys from the museum's permanent collection and key works from the Tom Figge Collection, Joe and Donna Tonelli, Ted and Judy Harmon of Decoys Unlimited, Inc., Ward Museum, Shelburne Museum and Illinois State Museum.

    Exhibit Spring Wb Med

10 Medical Inventions That Changed the World

    Opens February 9

The mass production of penicillin, invented in the early 1940s at the Northern Regional Research Laboratory - now the National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research (NCAUR) - in Peoria, Ill., saved countless lives during World War II and beyond. Peoria has since become a national leader in healthcare research and development.

In a first-of-its-kind exhibition, the Peoria Riverfront Museum's 10 Medical Inventions That Changed the World tells the stories of pioneering medicine - from the use of radiation to recent breakthroughs in virtual technologies and simulation - that have saved lives, cured diseases and made life better for billions of people worldwide

Partnering with local and national medical organizations and schools, the museum identifies and investigates the major medical technologies with worldwide impact. The exhibition will celebrate these amazing medical and healthcare innovations and their benefits for humanity.

The top 10 medical inventions will be chosen by popular vote. Exhibition visitors will have the opportunity to vote for their choice of the top medical invention and will be able to see the live results as the top 10 are tabulated over the course of the exhibition.

The Waterfowl Tradition in the Illinois River Valley
    Featuring Dr. Stephen Havera

    Sun, Feb 10 | 2-3 pm

    Auditorium

Illinois lies in the heart of the Mississippi Flyway with the Illinois and Mississippi rivers serving as pulsating arteries of travel for more than 20 species of ducks and geese. Illinois is generally a migration area for most web-footed species, with breeding grounds stretching northward and wintering grounds occupying more southerly climates.

The Illinois River was one of North America's most productive river systems. Over the centuries, the Illinois River has hosted the passage of waterfowl seeking the abundant food present in its lakes, marshes and forests. As a result, a remarkable waterfowl tradition emerged in the Illinois Valley over the past two centuries including decoy carvers, private duck clubs, public waterfowl areas, and biological investigations, among other aspects.

This presentation provides an overview of this incredible natural resource and mankind's responses.

Havera is known nationally for his work on the contentious waterfowl lead poisoning/nontoxic shot issue as well as his dedication to wildlife and their habitats. His work on wetlands has promoted the management, research and acquisition of critical habitat. He was relentless in his dedication to the restoration of Thompson Lake and the establishment of the Emiquon National Wildlife Refuge.

Dr. Stephen Havera has been providing professional service to our natural resources since he joined the Illinois Natural History Survey (INHS) in 1972. He remains active in the biological arena and maintains an Emeritus appointment with INHS.

Havera received a B.S. in Biology from Bradley University and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Zoology from the University of Illinois. He served two years in the U.S. Army Military Police. His professional experience spans five decades culminating as a Senior Professional Scientist and Director of the Frank C. Bellrose Waterfowl Research Center and Forbes Biological Station.
