Underworld (1927)

Director Josef von Sternberg helped shape the gangster film with Underworld, a stylish crime drama set in the dangerous world of Chicago's underworld. The story follows a notorious gangster, his loyal right-hand man, and a woman whose presence threatens to disrupt their relationship. A major influence on the crime films that followed, Underworld showcases the visual artistry and storytelling of the silent era.

As part of Beyond Words: The Art of the American Silent Film, guest curator JB Kaufman will be in person to introduce the film and share insights into its history and influence.
