Join with the Jewish Federation of Peoria, the Peoria Holocaust Memorial committee and the community in this important event. The Jewish Federation encourages students ages 10+ to attend as well, as they are the last generation who will hear these stories firsthand.
The White Rose Society essay contest winners will be announced.
The guest speaker of the night, Renee Abelman Grobart has witnessed much since her birth in Warsaw, Poland, in 1934. A child’s ordinary life was shattered by the Nazi invasion of her country in September 1938. The bombing of Warsaw led Renee to hold her mother’s hand to go east and escape the immediate war danger. Her father was away touring with the renown Yiddish Theatre group. Many refugees endured the harsh winter until the Russian army loaded them aboard train cars to transport deeper into Russia away from the fighting. Her father finally reached the rest of his family in Uzbekistan where they fought to survive.
Renee’s story is filled with hardship, horrific living conditions and the miracle of the three of them surviving until the end of the war.
