Join us for our new weekly film series in the Giant Screen Theater, "Marc Eliot’s Art of Film," with The New York Times Best-Selling Author! Peoria Riverfront Museum is pleased to announce the residency of film critic and historian Marc Eliot, who is the author of more than two dozen books on pop culture and biographies on Hollywood icons. Marc has personally selected each of the films in the "Art of Film" series and provides virtual commentary for each film before and after the film's screening at the museum.

Bonnie and Clyde , 1967. Director: Arthur Penn. With Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway.

This is one of a handful of late ‘60s films that put the final nail in the coffin of the Hollywood studio system. Bonnie and Clyde captured the mood and sense of romantic rebellion that highlighted Hollywood’s romantic interpretation of the counterculture, turning authority figures into villains and anti-heroes into beautiful, handsome, sexy underdogs (think of Vietnam). The film was edited by a dear friend of mine, Dede Allen, a pioneering Hollywood woman who created the shifts in this film, beginning new scenes before the previous one had ended and placing the camera where it normally wouldn’t go. Dede also edited Dog Day Afternoon, Serpico and many other modern-day classics, and, with Warren Beatty, co-produced Reds. More than any other transformative picture of the era, Bonnie and Clyde must be seen on the big screen.
