Director John Huston was able to get dimensionally vivid performances from the actors who play a desperate band of robbers seeking instant spiritual redemption in the form of unearned material reward. Huston asks if the members of the gang that plans their "last big heist" were morally corrupt because of a lack of belief in anything but money, or if they are outcasts from a legal system that leaves them no alternative but to rely on illegal get-rich-quick schemes, criminals looking for a fast fix to fulfill their own, if warped, American dream.
